When we think of an animal on the verge of extinction, we may imagine a bear or a whale, but there are also dogs in danger of extinction. We will tell you about some of these breeds in this article.

Dogs in danger of extinction?

We might think that with so many specimens that there are all over the world it is impossible that there are dogs in danger of extinction, but in this case we are referring to particular breeds that, due to crossing with others or the low birth rate, there are fewer pure specimens. These are some examples:

1. Lundehund

This dog of Norwegian origin is small in size and spitz type, whose name derives from the prefix ‘lunde’, which means puffin, and from the suffix ‘hund’, which means dog. The lundehund – the photo that opens this article – was developed to hunt birds and their eggs.

One of the characteristics of this dog is that it has six toes on each leg and has joints at the nape of the neck, so it can move its head more than any other dog. Its tail is bent towards the back and the color of the coat can vary between brown, white and gray.

2. Black and tan coonhound

In translation, this dog’s name could be ‘black and tan raccoon hunter’ and it is one of the six recognized varieties within the coonhound family. It was developed in the United States – like all the others – to help capture that small mammal that destroys fields and crops.

Endangered dogs: black and tan coonhound

The black and tan coonhound is a large hound, with strong bones, good muscles and a head with a prominent snout. Regarding his temperament, he is quite independent, active and gentle.

3. Puli

This is another of the endangered dogs on this list. It is native to Hungary, small to medium in size and known for its cloak with ‘laces’ or ‘dreadlocks’, which are formed after six months of life.

Endangered dogs: puli

The puli is a very affectionate herding dog that gets along wonderfully with children and is an excellent guardian. It adapts to urban or country life, but in any case it needs intense exercise on a daily basis.

4. Rhodesian ridge

It is an elegant and very beautiful dog, known by its name in English (rhodesian ridgeback) and that has been created in South Africa. Very agile and fast (it runs at 65 km / h), this dog is used for the house, the company and the guard.

Endangered Dogs: Rhodesian Crested

The Rhodesian Crested has a short reddish-brown coat and has a kind of ‘crest’ on its back. Regarding its temperament, it is a loyal, intelligent, stable, strong, protective animal and patient with children.

5. Affenpinscher

The last of the endangered dogs on this list is a little more than quirky. To begin with, its name means ‘pinscher-monkey’ in German, due to its large round, shaggy head and short, black bristly fur.

Endangered dogs: affenpinscher

The affenpinscher is stocky, with pointed ears and a dominant lower jaw. He is less than 12 inches tall and weighs just over three kilos: he is intelligent, alert, affectionate and active.

Unfortunately, there are other dog breeds in danger of extinction that we must review: the Chinese crested, the Catalburun, the Peruvian hairless dog, the Bedlington terrier, the catahoula leopard, the Tibetan mastiff, the mudi, the xoloitzcuintle, the Thai ridgeback and the otterhounds.
