Papillon or continental dwarf straight-eared spaniel

The straight-eared dwarf continental papillon or spaniel is a small dog of French-Belgian origin with the ideal characteristics for living in a flat. Here we tell you a little more about the origin of the breed, its appearance and character.

Origin of the breed

Although there are no specific details about the breed’s history, experts conclude that it is a fairly ancient breed, over 300 years old. In fact, in French paintings from the 18th and 19th centuries you can see companion dogs very similar to the current standard.

Despite its long history, the breed standard is relatively recent, specifically from 1990. It indicates that the papillon belongs to group nine according to the classification of the International Cynological Federation.

Physical appearance of the papillon

We are before a company can type toy of harmonious structure, with slightly longer than tall body. Its head is proportional to the rest of the body with a moderately long snout, although shorter than the skull. Its naso-frontal depression is clearly visible, especially in the smaller specimens.

The ears are the most important trait to take into account when determining the type, since within the continental dwarf spaniel breed there are two varieties: the papillon and the phalene. When the ear has a high implantation, with the conchian cartilage open and oriented to one side, we speak of the first.

In the context of contests, two categories are distinguished by size:

  • A weight of less than 2.5 kilos in both males and females.
  • A weight of 2.5 to 4.5 kilos in males and two and a half to five kilograms in females.

Regarding the coat, the papillon has a single abundant, shiny and wavy coat. The appearance of the coat resembles that of the English spaniel, but clearly differs from the coat of the Pekingese spaniel; It should not bear any resemblance to that of the Pomeranian. All colors are allowed on a white background, which should predominate on the body and extremities.

Papillon character

The papillon, like most small dogs belonging to group 9, is playful, affectionate and lively. It adapts very well to small apartments, making it ideal for city life.

It is true that they can be somewhat jealous and possessive, so their socialization and training should start from a young age. He gets along well with children and adapts to family life.

Papillon health and care

Its coat is delicate and requires certain care ; It is advisable to take it to the dog groomer to have the breed cut marked at least twice a year. Similarly, a weekly brushing is advisable so that it does not shed a lot of hair.

Despite its delicate appearance, the papillon is a hardy breed for which no special incidence of disease has been reported. However, to ensure that our pet is healthy, we must take it to the veterinary consultation for regular check-ups and make sure that its diet is complete and balanced.
