Devon Rex, A Cat That Always Needs Company

Short curly hair, large pixie ears, elongated body and luminous eyes are the physical characteristics that stand out the most in the Devon Rex , a cat that adores human company. It is a docile, outgoing, noble and intelligent kitten that, if you choose it to share your life, it will surely follow you throughout the house, demanding your attention.

A feline that does not want to be alone

These friendly eared ones are very chilly. Perhaps this characteristic has made them so sociable with people. Although, in truth, many cats are and, more and more, demolish with the claim that they are independent and distant animals.

The truth is that Devon Rex love to feel comfortable, warm and safe on their owners’ laps, and even on their shoulders. They are affectionate, active and playful and get along very well, both with children and with the elderly.

And while they adapt easily to enclosed spaces, they hate being alone. So, in case there are no humans in the house at certain times of the day, the ideal is to get them a cat companion. Keep in mind that they are not jealous, so they will easily accommodate the new member of the family.

Appearance of the Devon Rex

In addition to those tremendous widely separated ears, with a wide base and rounded tips, and that coat that gives it the appearance of a poorly shorn sheep , the Devon Rex has the following characteristics :

• Small, triangular head.

• Oval face, with full cheeks and well defined chin.
• Eyes also oval, separated and full of light.
• Nose with a prominent bridge and short muzzle.
• Slender neck.
• Long and thin legs, slightly twisted in relation to the body. The front limbs are shorter than the hind limbs.
• Arched back.
• Curly whiskers and eyebrows.
• Long and thin tail.

Other characteristics of these friendly felines

The males of this breed weigh between 4 and 6 kilos and the females between 3 and 5. And, although their gait seems somewhat ramshackle, they are agile animals, capable of performing the most varied pirouettes and acrobatics. Life expectancy is between 9 and 15 years.

Keep in mind that the soft coat of the Devon Rex , in addition to being short, is usually fine and less dense than in other breeds. And while this seems to be an advantage for allergy sufferers, it is not for kittens.

For this reason, they are usually always looking for the warmth that their mantle does not finish providing them. The ideal, then, is that their beds are located in warm places in the houses, so that they feel as comfortable as in the lap of their owners.

A pussycat of English descent

The origin of this funny pussycat is located in the 60s of the last century. It is the result of a natural genetic mutation, which is responsible for his curly hair. The first specimens were discovered by chance in an abandoned mine in the county of Devon, England. That’s where its name comes from.

But, although they look similar to Cornish Rex , the gene that mutates and causes wavy fur in both breeds is different. Therefore, if they are crossed with each other, smooth-coated specimens are obtained.

On the other hand, although their appearance may denote fragility, they are strong and healthy animals that do not require great care. All you need to do is brush it during shedding to remove dead hair and check if your ears don’t accumulate excess wax.

But they should also be accustomed to taking a bath every so often, since their fur tends to accumulate more fat than is advisable. And you have to take care that they do not eat excessively because the extra kilos can affect their thin legs.
